BM3 Landscape was commissioned to develop a landscape strategy for a new 70-unit extra-care residential scheme on Station Road, Newport. The brief called for a design that was cost-effective, low-maintenance, and sensitive to the local environment.
The strategy makes use of native and low-maintenance planting, including shrubs and perennials that provide seasonal interest through flowers and foliage. Planting was also selected with wildlife in mind, with many species chosen for their value to pollinators. Small native street trees such as Prunus, Amelanchier and Sorbus introduce year-round interest through blossom, fruit and varied forms, while also boosting site biodiversity.
The scheme places strong emphasis on communal outdoor spaces to encourage social interaction and relaxation. Key features include an entrance square, a lounge/bistro terrace, and residents’ gardens. Within the courtyard, a dedicated ‘Grow Space’ provides opportunities for community gardening and hands-on interaction with nature. Raised timber sleeper planters and a small tool shed support residents who wish to grow plants and vegetables.
Hard landscaping has been carefully coordinated with the planting design. High-quality materials include brindle 200x100 block pavers for garden paths and buff concrete flags for private terraces. Timber benches and pergolas are placed within the communal gardens to create focal points and destinations for residents. Estate railings and low boundary walls provide both security and a strong sense of enclosure, while contributing positively to the overall character of the development.
This integrated and thoughtful approach delivers a landscape that is functional, sustainable, and socially inclusive, enriching both the day-to-day lives of residents and the wider setting of the scheme.
