ClientSevern Vale Housing Association / University of Gloucestershire
Cost£3.8m

As the University of Gloucestershire has expanded student accommodation has become limited around the city. This scheme provides 100 student bed-sits including a warden’s flat. Each floor has three clusters of flats each with a communal kitchen and lounge. The design was developed closely with the university to ensure all of their requirements were catered for.

Standing on a prominent corner of two of the busiest roads in Cheltenham, noise and poor air quality would be a problem for residents, therefore the building was kept sealed and ventilated mechanically with heat recovery and air conditioning for cooling.

The building is constructed with super insulated timber frames and clad with copper, fibre cement panels and render.

The design brief was to create a contemporary building sympathetic with its immediate surroundings. Cheltenham generally has many architectural styles but nothing stands out more than Regency Architecture, which informed the scheme’s design. Long and detailed planning meetings were held to ensure the design was right as well as public consultations ensuring we reassured any concerns local residents had.
