BM3 Landscape was instructed to work alongside the practice’s architecture team to provide 66 new apartments for people over the age of 55, for affordable rent. The scheme is situated in Bloxwich, Wallsall and covers a total of 0.61 hectares. The site was vacant and was ideal for an apartment block, due to its location, close to amenities and the canal, allowing residents to benefit from views.

The courtyard typology of the building and its internal communal spaces allow access to the garden courtyard. A simple design of planters, small lawn space and larger patio spill out space surrounded by private patios, creates a versatile garden where residents can get together to socialise or dine outdoors. Details, such as provision of seating with back and armrests, make the garden more appealing and comfortable for the target demographic. The planting scheme employs a traditional palette of low-maintenance shrubs and perennials arranged to provide colour, variety of shape and textures, we well as interest throughout the year. A selection of herbs are also used to encourage residents to take ownership of the communal garden space and use the attractive outdoor space.
