Building Skills Centre, Walsall

ClientWalsall Housing Group
Cost£0.7m

Walsall Housing Group’s building trades training centre is CITB and City & Guilds Accredited and has Beacon Status for excellence. Their previous facility was spread over a number of sites and was reaching capacity. BM3 were asked to convert a redundant industrial unit in Walsall into a new facility for the training centre combining their four main fields of construction training, carpentry, plumbing, electrical installations and bricklaying.

The refurbishment included adding a number of workshops, administration facilities and a cafeteria. As part of this programme of refurbishment a new top lit Bricklaying Workshop extension was proposed. The superstructure of the new workshop was built by the apprentices under supervision, enabling the trainees to achieve the relevant experience for their qualification.

The project was realised on a very tight budget because there were no grants or public funds that could be drawn upon. BM3 Architecture contributed by carrying out the commission "at cost" to help our client to provide this excellent resource within Walsall.
